Average human I.Q is about 100.
- The average IQ score is actually around 110-115 now; it hasn’t been adjusted for a while. (Theoretically as a kid it’s supposed to be “mental age divided by physical age times 100” but that doesn’t apply to adults or kids as young as 2, and that scale’s been adjusted a number of times.)
- Einstein never took an IQ test (at least not that was recorded). He’s commonly estimated to have had an IQ of ‘just over 160’, but saying it’s “four points less than Einstein” is ridiculous and just factually incorrect.
- IQ tests are really inherently classist/ableist/racist/sexist/problematic in general, and are basically just a big circle-jerk for neurotypical rich white men (and I say this as someone who scored rather well and was very proud of it for a number of years).
- IQ means pretty much nothing for the most part, and especially not something as small as 4 points. IIRC from my psych classes the standard deviation is about 15 points, so 4 points either direction could easily change between tests. I know people with low measured IQ who are some of the smartest people around and people with a high IQ who didn’t apply themselves and who struggle with basic skills of life, let alone anything academic.
Basically this fact, while technically true, is so stupid as to be meaningless and is supporting a system that’s not just meaningless but also problematic in both its measurement and its use.
This is also my main reason with this blog - they take somewhat interesting facts (this child is likely incredibly smart and/or just takes tests really well) and then present them in the worst possible way, and it just makes me rage.
